How to Choose a Preschool in Charlotte
Choosing a preschool is one of the first big decisions you make for your little one, and it can feel like a lot. Every program says it is warm, safe and fun, so how do you tell them apart? I put this guide together to make the search a little easier. Tour at least two or three programs, take this list with you, and trust what you see and feel when you walk in the door.
Questions to ask on your tour
- What is your star rating, and may I see your license? Every licensed center in North Carolina posts its license where families can see it. Religious-sponsored programs do not receive a star rating, so ask those programs how they are monitored.
- How many children are in my child's room, and how many teachers? Smaller groups mean more one-on-one time. The state's search site lists each center's staff-to-child ratio policy, so you can compare.
- How long have the teachers been here? Teachers who stay give children the same caring grown-ups all year, and that steadiness matters at this age.
- What does a normal day look like? Look for a good mix of play, outdoor time, stories, music, art and rest. Ask how much screen time there is, if any.
- How do you handle tantrums, biting and big feelings? Listen for calm redirection and teaching children words for their feelings, not shaming or long time-outs.
- How will you keep me in the loop? Ask about daily reports, apps, photos, and how you will hear about a bump, a fall or a hard day.
- What are your safety routines? Ask about sign-in and pickup rules, fire and lockdown drills, food allergies, medicines and handwashing.
- What does it really cost? Tuition is only part of it. Ask about registration and supply fees, late pickup fees, holiday closures and what happens to tuition when your child is sick.
- Can I drop in again without calling ahead? A program that is proud of its classrooms will welcome a second look.
Red flags
- You are not allowed to see the classroom your child would be in.
- The license is not posted, or the staff cannot tell you their rating.
- Rooms are crowded, children seem bored or upset, and teachers are on their phones.
- Fees and policies are vague, or you are pushed to sign and pay on the spot.
- The program's visit reports show repeated problems that no one can explain.
How to look up a North Carolina child care center
The NC Division of Child Development and Early Education (DCDEE) runs a free Child Care Facility Search Site at ncchildcare.ncdhhs.gov. Search by county, zip code or the center's name, then click the center to see its license and star rating, visit reports, and any administrative actions from the past three years. One star means a center meets the state's minimum requirements, and higher stars are earned by meeting voluntary, higher standards. North Carolina updated its star rated license rules on July 1, 2025, so you may see older or newer rating details on different licenses.
Looking across the state line in Fort Mill, Tega Cay or Rock Hill? South Carolina's search at scchildcare.org lets you look up a provider by zip code or name and shows its licensing status, ABC Quality rating and recent inspections.
Free pre-K for 4-year-olds
Mecklenburg County families with a child who turns 4 by August 31 can look into MECK Pre-K, a free, county-funded program held in 4 and 5 star centers. North Carolina also offers NC Pre-K for eligible 4-year-olds. Spaces fill up, so apply early and check each program's current eligibility rules.
